Hillsdale Modern Ranch, a whole-house remodel with addition, is located in a beloved neighborhood with dynamic rolling terrain and predominantly populated with low-key 1950s homes. The kitchen, while modest in footprint, is reconfigured in its entirety as part of this larger project. The layout is simple and practical, with a restrained palette of materials selected to put the focus on craft and quality. A Walnut island complements perimeter White Oak cabinetry with a modified shaker door detail. The textural handmade tiles give imperfect visual interest while remaining quiet and supportive. Custom-fabricated cold-rolled steel details add depth, and a hand-applied living finish will age over time. A home “command center” is hidden by steel and Oak striped doors (a lovely magnetized surface for family notes and ephemera), and a step stool for young children is hidden within a cabinet end panel. While the dining and living rooms are adjacent to this space, we embraced the idea of connection, yet rejected the trend of one large open great room. Defined space adds a warmth and usability to this modestly scaled home.
